FREE RESOURCE - What is a medium? If someone asks which medium (singular) you use they are most likely asking if you are an oil painter, watercolorist, or an acrylic painter. Oil pastels, colored pencil and graphite artists all work in their chosen medium as do those artists who create non-traditional works of art and all these are referenced as mediums and sometimes as media. Historically artists created all their own mediums and refined the techniques for using them. The earliest use of water-soluble pigments dates back to Paleolithic times. This Classroom contains videos and text lessons showing how to use Traditions Mediums.

The Power of Observation. Why does the artist's success depend on their power of observation? When our basic level of awareness is raised through education we begin to look at things differently. We then pay closer attention. When our subliminal perception is being used or manipulated to change the way we react or see something we read between the lines, we go deeper into evaluation. The same idea happens to the student artist before they learn to ‘see’. Unless our observation skills are honed and developed we will be unaware of underling or less obvious details. Color is one example. Without a keen sense of observation our basic level of awareness remains the same. Streaming video, photographs, quizzes, text lessons. - No additional supplies required.
